Floyd Crosby

Floyd Crosby was a cinematographer in the early to mid 1900s. He received his education from the New York Institute of Photography. Crosby was best known for his film "High Noon", starring Gary Cooper. Floyd Crosby was born in 1899 in New York City. His career began in New York City on Wall Street. While working on Wall Street, Crosby had a meeting with William Beebe which led to a job as an apprentice photographer on a documentary project of Beebe's.

This led to Crosby working on other films, specializing in documentaries for two decades. During World War II, Crosby was in the air force where he rose to the rank of major and began producing reference films for pilots in the air force. The training films were for pilots learning air routes and landing patterns. After World War II, Crosby returned to his career as a cinematographer.

His work in film, aside from documentaries, began in 1951. He worked as a co-photographer on the film “The Brave Bulls”. The next year, Crosby filmed “High Noon”. This film was known for its crisp black and white photography. Floyd Crosby was most known for his work on low-budget, high-grossing films. After a long, successful career, Crosby settled down and retired in California. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 85.
